Adverbs(ふくし)

adverb is a word which adds information to the sentence verb ,adjective,or the whole sentence.

1.adverbs modify verbs .

for example

ゆっくり  (yukkuri)   slowly                        はやく (hayaku)   quickly

つよく (tuyoku)  strongly                        よわく (yowaku)   weakly

たかく (takaku)   high                              ひくく ( hikuku)  low

Let's see the connection with verbs.

ゆっくり あるく (yukkuri aruku)    walk slowly

つよく おす (tsuyoku osu)       push strongly

たかく とぶ (takaku tobu)      jump high

The word order is the opposite of English.

2.adverbs modify adjectives

for example

とても,かなり (totemo,kanari)    very , extremely

さらに、もっと (sarani,motto)   more

Let's see the connection with adjectives.

とても げんきな (totemo  genkina)     very fine

もっと むずかしい (motto muzukashii)    more difficult

In this case the word order is the same as English. This is getting confusing!! so don't think too much.  I am just trying to explain the adverbs' pattern.

3.adverbs modify whole sentences.

for example

いつも  (itsumo)   always                 たいてい (taitei)  ususally

しばしば (sibasiba)  often             ときどき (tokidoki)  sometimes

すでに (sudeni)   already              いままでに(imamadeni)  ever

めったに〜しない (mettani~shinai)    rarely,seldom

ほとんど〜しない (hotondo~sinai)  hardly                            etc.....
